Description:
|
Fall of Princes. Book six: Crassus made war on Orodes despite numerous bad omens because he was greedy for the spoils of Parthia. However Orodes was victorious and Crassus was captured and killed. Orodes had the head of Crassus cut off and ordered that it was filled with molten gold as no amount of treasure was able to assuage his thirst for gold. Orodes made his son Pacorus the constable of Syria and he was killed defending it from the Roman Cassius. As he grew old Orodes had to put one of his illegitimate sons on the throne, as his legitimate sons were dead. Phraates was crowned and soon after murdered his aging father. Small illuminated and coloured initials introduce the verses. The written space is 285 x 200 mm in two columns and the script is rather an ugly and unstable anglicana formata.

Ostensibly the work is an adaptation of Laurent de Premierfait's 1409 translation of Giovanni Boccaccio's 'De casibus vivorum illustrium', a collection of moralized tragedies, extending from Adam to King John of France, that were designed to illustrate Fortune's fickle nature and the downfalls brought on by sinful living and unjust government.
